I think it's good for a first attempt, but I am always open to constructive critiques.

| The scanning has begun |
[Oct. 11th, 2005|09:14 pm] |
I've finally gotten access to the school's scanners. All except the one I want, of course. Anyway, I've scanned one third of my final slide show from "Color Communications" last spring. Of course, there's much more to the slide show than just the images, but so far all I have are images. Because of the number, and the nature of the images (these were meant to flash by fairly quickly, not be examined individually) I've made them smaller than my usual style. I have done no color correction on these, but they are fairly "correct" already. When you look at them, you may feel that they don't look correct. That's largely intentional. I hope at some future point to post the entire set as a movie, complete with visual and sound effects.
The models are fellow photo students, TAs, friends and family.
( If you'd just hit the lights for me, I can get started... ) |

| Tonight's shoot |
[Feb. 4th, 2005|12:48 am] |
After a long absence, I post again. Don't think this means I'm back, really... But tonight I did a studio shoot of my cousin, and rather than go to sleep like a sane person, I decided to play with the images. Here, enjoy one:

Very basic, yes, but like nothing I've ever done before, and thus, I'm excited by a new possibility. |

| Here's the print |
[Oct. 15th, 2004|07:37 pm] |
My first semi-serious print from a 4x5 negative. This was Monday, and I've covered a great deal since then in class and in the Darkroom, so by the time I get around to scanning another print, I hope to have a better quality print than this. Some detail is lost in the scan, other detail is lost in the print I scanned due to exhausted chemistry in the RC developer machine (Yes, I have better prints, without this problem, and I scanned this one. Oops.)
Oh yeah, and the frame is not square, due to the experimental method I used to get the feathery border. It need practice, or another method.

I think I need to get my hands on a proper scanner, at least for use. Not allowed to use the digital equipment at school, yet. |

| Return of an old favorite |
[Oct. 9th, 2004|08:56 pm] |
 1. Tree and Traffic 2
This is another of my distorted 4x5 negatives... But I thought I'd give it its own space because this is based on one of my favorite shots from when I first started working with the Digital Rebel:

| 4x5 negatives |
[Oct. 9th, 2004|08:49 pm] |
Okay... We aren't allowed to use the digital equipment at school until we start a digital class, and I don't have a scanner, but I wanted to share with my loyal fans here (that means you) some of the work I'm doing now that I am a full-time photography student... So I dropped my negatives on a light table and snapped them with my digital camera. It was not possible to get the negatives parallel to the sensor... They are clearly distorted, and you'll see marks of overdevelopment on most of them... But hey... I'm new to the format. :) For once, I'm not asking for criticism. I wouldn't object, by any stretch, but I'm getting tons of feedback at school.

| I am unemployed |
[Sep. 30th, 2004|11:52 pm] |
Okay... Generally, I use this space to focus on my photography and don't put a lot of autobiographical narrative here... So my apologies for this violation of principle.
As of 6pm today, I am unemployed.
The requisite 2 weeks (and a couple days) back, I gave notice at my job, because it was time to move on, and because I wished to apply to photography school and make a major career move. This was a tough decision. In part, the timing, because I didn't have a job lined up, I hadn't (and haven't yet) been accepted to Photography school. In part, leaving a job where I have been working for 6 years, and the only job I've ever held for any length of time at all... In part because I like the people I was working with until today. However, I was certain that I had to commit myself to a new course, and I did.
So, when I finished work, I decided I needed to reward the part of myself that sees this as an opportunity, as a positive change, and celebrate my unemployment with a little moo shi, and I did (Am I decisive in this story, or what?) Anyway, ( the payoff is below the cut ) |

| Another spider |
[Sep. 24th, 2004|03:29 pm] |
I'm getting a lot of... 'uneven' shots, lately. Shots with something valuable, unexpected, or hard to acheive, but lacking in one way or another. I look at them in Photoshop, and can't figure out the right way to crop them, or wish something were in focus which isn't, or whatever. These are examples of this phenomenon, although it's hard to put my finger on what's wrong about them. Or even what's right. But I'm convinced anyway.

Still working on capturing the coolness of cool trees. I'm not sure which of these I like better, so please compare and leave a comment.
